new poster…

•May 1, 2009 • 1 Comment

So the more and more I looked at the original poster, and the more I thought about what Lee was talking about in class, to make it clear to the viewer what the audio file is about and giving easy directions the more I felt my original poster was ….well…off by a long shot.

So I redid the whole thing, using some of the initial thinking but with a new twist. I’ll let it speak for itself, I wish I had more time to work on it, but I think it’s as good as it’ll get with the time I have this weekend. (remember this is due monday)

So here it is…

I wanted to incorporate more of what the audio file was about and what I was trying to tell. Which was basically a story. I was going take the movie poster route and have “coming soon, rated pg, etc.” all over it but since it was a audio file I figured I’d make it a little different. I wanted it to be flashy, but easy to read. Explaining everything I could with the space I have without taking away from the design. I wanted the joker to still be on there but not so much that it makes it the whole point of the poster. So if you have heard my audio file, you can see why I have the joker on there almost hidden on the new poster. I kept the green and black theme. And added roses as that was a big piece of the story that wasn’t on the original poster.

Green Bean Project

•April 27, 2009 • 3 Comments

This project was much different than the usual stuff we’ve done. This one required going downtown greensboro, to the coffee shop the Green Bean. We were to sit in a specific seat and describe the world around us, looking out the window. And come up with a way to recreate what experienced via audio. The audio file requred making a script, careful planning, and editing. The point was for anyone to go to our blogs and experience it for themselves. An open invitation to our world…

Here is my audio file..

The premise of the audio is that I didnt just want to describe the events around me word for word, but to take the listener to a different time, and in a different atmostphere. Theres a sad love story with a comical twist at the end.

Drawing the Future (Oles)

Things I wanted the finder of the bookmark to notice:

  • repetition of the authors name (black bold letters on top)
  • red ID number of the book
  • back to the future image in the background

City At the Edge of the World (Feininger)

city-at-the-end-of-the-world_wfw

Things I wanted the finder of the bookmark to notice:

  • Book cover of “city at the edge of the planet” crossed out, and replaced with the word “world” to fit.
  • google search of the title of the book in the background
  • cut images to make “edges” overlapped

Kenneth Callahan: Universal Voyage (Johnson)

Things I wanted the finder of the bookmark to notice:

  • google search background, reversed and highlighted in red of the artist’s name
  • image of the artist (bottom middle)
  • spaceships and astronautProxy-Connection: keep-alive

hese are three seperate books, and will be probably found seperately, I wanted to incorporate a unified theme or style with all three. In a way, to link the anonymous bookmarks back to one creator. But of course I didnt want to leave my name. I had a lot of fun with these three. It was the first time I got to use photoshop in this class. And I love photoshop. Hopefully I’ll get more time to work on one piece before the class is over, solely made in photoshop.

Leaving a (book) Mark…

So for our next project, we were asked to go to the library and select three books. Almost at random, but mainly for the title. Then we were asked to do some research on the books, and have images ready to make a collage of some sort to insert and leave in the book when were to return them. Leaving our mark in the pages…

My three selected books:

  • Drawing the Future (Oles)
  • City At the Edge of the World (Feininger)
  • Kenneth Callahan: Universal Voyage (Johnson)

books

I’ll post more about my created collages later this week.

Downtown Greensboro, my 2nd home.

Hmm…even though I came to class a little bit late, and pretty sick. As soon as I heard we were traveling to downtown Greensboro, I got pretty excited. I love downtown Greensboro, and really all downtown cities in general. Not just because I work there, but because it’s a completely different experience from where I grew up and went to school. The people, the smells, the noises, the lights, etc. all bring out the best of life to me. Anyways… the make a long story short. I’m a city boy at heart.

While downtown we were asked to chalk lines around the city to make extensions of things would and wouldn’t notice in the downtown area. I was tagged with Jake (who in my opinion is a pretty cool guy.) And we chalked up two different pieces.

First…

street-chalk-2

The famous fountain. The two lines were pretty much an extension of the fountain. Almost imagining if the fountain were to keep extending into the sidewalk.

next…

street-chalk

The lines around the road traffic direction. I think me and Jake liked this one the most due to it being a little more daredevil. We had to watch out for cars coming while trying lay this one down. Almost felt like tagging graffiti, keeping a look out all while trying to lay down your mark.

And then…The birds…

pigeions

We were asked to make pigeons out of newspaper and artist tape.  Here are me and Jacob’s creation. Honestly I’m more interested in the writing on the news paper stand, than the birds themselves. But that’s another story….

So as for my incense holder, the piece of art I found in the art gallery that best represented a connection to my original was the melted plastic piece. Sorry, I don’t remember the artist or the name but it’s very familiar if you’ve seen it before.

artgallery

I chose this piece because the colors. If you’ve ever purchased incense before, most of the time they are painted or colored at the bottom tip to represent the specific smell. But of course,  whenever burned the smoke put out all looks the same. Now imagine if they all were different colors. In my head, the image above is what I pictured if a room filled with incense smoke would look like. the shapes and lines made would be very random as smoke moves in a similar fashion. The melted chairs could represent the incense branching out until the smell, colors, and smoke dissipates.

Well we are all back from spring break, and getting back into the grove again.  Sorry I did not get a chance to update over the break but i’m back with some old stuff, and new, and some info on the future…

As for my break, it was good and bad. My car got broken into, and some stuff was stolen. Good news, insurance paid for it, and i got everything worked out in time for my 22nd birthday. Got all my partying out of my system so it’s back to work.

Old stuff…

this was the coin toss project we did outside. was a simple break down of 10 tosses broken down into 10 sections. the shape was random, but the initial triangle represented the shape we used outside with the chalk.

0316090959

This was the value project where we translated an action into different values, in which a way you could track your progress of whatever action into a value “chart” or artwork.  Almost like the coin toss. In this case, I chose a game of 9 ball of pool, and how many balls were left after each game. The 10 value shades are represented by the 9 balls and the cue ball. the 0 value in the center is the cue ball, the 0 values in the are around it are the games with no balls left on the table, and the background value represents the pool table itself. …the hardest thing was not letting it smudge.

stencil drawing. I ended up losing my stencil somehow in the classroom. luckly mel let me borrow hers. as you can see the stencil was a “I” shape. it’s difficult doing this one due to the fact there are no other shapes, just the basic rectangle. so I felt i should keep it simple. some overlapping, but nothing shaded. I didnt want to fill up the page, it reminded me of a game of jinga, after someone loses of course.

In this specific drawing, we were told to scatter around the art building and draw 10 different scenes and objects, at different view points. I liked this project alot. though when came back into the classroom it was sort of a bummer to hear that we had mark out any positive space in our drawing, as you can see by the dark scratches. but i understood the reason for it, so it was all good and actually interesting to see everyones different perspectives on the world.

upcoming stuff…

here is my object for the 2-d line drawing project coming up this week. it’s actually an incense holder.

we shall see where this goes soon enough.
